Open26 Mar, 2026, 00:00 - 22 May, 2026, 17:00

Have Your Say: Help Shape the Future of the Southern Region

The Southern Regional Assembly has commenced the review of the Regional Spatial and Economic Strategy (RSES) for the Southern Region. The RSES sets the long-term strategy for planning and economic development in the Southern Region and will include Metropolitan Area Strategic Plans (MASPs) for Cork, Limerick-Shannon, and Waterford.

The RSES supports the implementation of the National Planning Framework and provides the framework for City and County Development Plans for Carlow, Clare, Cork (City and County), Kerry, Kilkenny, Limerick, Tipperary, Waterford and Wexford.

The RSES will address key issues affecting the future development of the Southern Region, such as:

  • How can we meet needs for housing and public amenities across our Cities, Metropolitan Areas, Towns, and Rural Communities?
  • How can we provide for high-quality services and places that create vibrant communities?
  • What environmental and sustainability opportunities should be prioritised for adaptation and growth in the Region?
  • How can we provide for energy independence for our region and country?
  • How can we deliver mobility and transport systems that are efficient, accessible, and sustainable?
  • How can the Region strengthen its economy and attract investment while supporting success, competitiveness, and reduced inequality?
  • How can the Region build on its existing knowledge, research, and educational strengths and create wider opportunities for people to access skills, learning, and innovation?

The Draft RSES will be prepared for public comment before the end of 2026. Prior to that we want to hear your views on the long-term issues that should be addressed in the RSES. Four Issues Papers have been prepared to assist the public in responding to the review:

These are available at the following locations:

  • Assembly website: https://southernassembly.ie/rses-review/
  • Assembly Office: Assembly House, O’Connell Street, Waterford X91F8PC (weekday office hours)
  • Planning counters in all 10 local authorities in the Southern Regional Assembly (check opening hours locally)
